 Part 1 - UDL Article Summary The article written by Kavita Rao, Sean J. Smith, and K. Alisa Lowrey titled UDL and Intellectual Disability: What Do We Know and Where Do We Go? highlights the importance of UDL for students with intellectual disability (ID). This article discussed the reason behind the research, what current research is available, and what considerations we need for future research. Students with ID are commonly placed in separate settings than their peers, and when they are included, it is typically for experiences that are nonacademic. The UDL framework provides opportunities so that students with ID can be included in general education settings. It has three principles that educators use to plan their instruction. The three principles are "provide multiple means of representation, provide multiple means of action and expression, and provide multiple means of engagement" (Rao, Smith, & Lowrey, 2017, p. 37). Part 1 Magic School AI Lesson Plan Evaluation of the Lesson Plan The lesson that was created by the online platform Magic School AI for the Oklahoma Academic Math Standard K.N.1.7 "Find a number that is 1 more or 1 less than a given number up to 10" (Oklahoma State Department of Education, 2022) provided a thorough outline for a lesson plan. This lesson plan addressed this standard and included some pieces of another standard by including vocabulary terms such as more and less . There are opportunities for students to use manipulatives and answer questions related to the standard in various ways throughout the lesson, including written and verbal responses. The lesson aligns with ISTE Standard 1, as it allows students to work with hands-on technology tools and manipulatives such as number lines and counting bears. This lesson is a beginning outline for a lesson that can be rigorous; however, it lacks certain aspects that I believe create engagement and thinking opportunities...

Chapter 5 Takeaways In chapter 5 of How People Learn II: Learners, Contexts, and Cultures ( National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018) the focus is on knowledge and reasoning by explaining how people use past experiences and connect them to create a deeper understanding of their knowledge or the world around them. The chapter also ends by providing learning strategies that can support a deeper learning and help students retain information they are learning.  The three things that I felt were most important from this chapter are expertise, integration, and the learning strategies.  Expertise is related to knowledge, the chapter focuses more on the benefits of expertise. Before we know what the benefits are, I want to clarify what expertise is.  Authentic Intellectual Work/Authentic Instructional & Assessment Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW) is using the knowledge and skills that students and people learn to apply them to real-world problems in meaningful ways. AIW is more than memorizing facts or completing routines just for the sake of doing them. This reminds me of the book Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K–12 by Peter Liljedahl. The book discusses the difference between teaching math through memorization and creating opportunities for students to practice and apply their understanding of math concepts. One of the first statements in the book is, “If we want our students to think, we need to give them something to think about” (Liljedahl, 2021). This highlights the importance of creating learning experiences that require students to use and apply their knowledge, rather than simply reciting information. Introduction Hello everybody! Welcome to my blog! I live in Claremore with my husband, our two dogs, Sandie and Theo, and our two cats, Princess and Winston. I love hanging around snuggling my sweet animals, as well as baking, and recently have found a new interest in running 5K’s. I am currently a Kindergarten teacher at Claremont Elementary. I am on the countdown of nine days left of this school year and I am ready for summer! I have taught kindergarten for two years now and will continue next year, as for the future I am open to whatever doors open with opportunities. I would love to possibly teach first grade, or go into a position of working directly in reading intervention with elementary age students. I found that I loved working with specific reading intervention and struggling readers through doing tutoring and summer school through my district and experiencing first hand the successes and hard work of students who are struggling readers.
